It is 1940. The Nazis have taken the Channel Islands, fifteen miles from the coast of France. The locals are provincial island folk, living at peace until evil forces land. No one is coming to save them. They are on their own.
Geoffrey Norman, who was born and raised in Jersey and went on to become a Hollywood screenwriter, actor and author, relates his story, not written for TV, but actually experienced during his extraordinary childhood.
Remembrance unfolds like a classic feature film through five years of Nazi Occupation. Family, friends, schoolteachers, Nazi guards, slave workers and local farmhands speaking in their native Norman-French feature in young Geoffrey’s world as he bounces from the antics of his boyhood adventures to the realities of enemy occupation.
This tale of childhood innocence and adult endurance will appeal to all readers interested in human survival under difficult circumstances; it is a story that will broaden understanding of the home front during the Second World War. In the author’s words, ‘Provincialism is one of the best weapons with which to fight totalitarianism.’

REMEMBRANCE Growing up under the Nazi Occupation of the British Channel Islands 1940–45 eBook Geoffrey MesservyNorman Reviews

REMEMBRANCE reads like Stephen King's novel, "Stand by Me" meets the Steven Spielberg film, "The Goonies." Although, the subject matter, the Nazi Occupation of Jersey, a small British Island off the coast of France, is serious and for some, fatal, it is written in a way that is acceptable to middle grade and high school students, as well as adults interested in the true history and personal experiences of that time.

The author, J.G. Messervy-Norman, writes with a professional flair, due to his skill as a screenwriter in Hollywood, that moves the story along as the reader waits to find out what more trouble little Geoffrey can get into and how does he manage as a small boy to interact with German soldiers, his parents, school friends and teachers. We find out throughout, that, like most little boys, everywhere, of all ages, he seeks with a passion, opportunities to acquire, trade, and hide various military souvenirs. The stories, presented through the eyes of little Geoffrey, illustrate the awkward balance all the islanders must confront between cooperation and collaboration. The author writes with a kind of counter-balance within his experiences and the experiences of the adults he is also interacting with. For example, why is it that he is caned for taking a gift of bread from a German cook, yet a local government official is allowed to share "good British whisky" with the German command?

Unlike most novels with a child protagonist, REMEMBRANCE informs the reader of the political and military situations that form the background of his childhood throughout this selected timeline. We read about Churchill's reaction to the taking of this British territory as well as the intricate German High Command structure on the island.

He also includes family as well as portraits photographs of the key German and local government figures in this real-life drama. The author has even provided very professionally arranged collages and montages of bunkers and extant anti-aircraft guns still 'in situ' on the island.

As an American home-school mom and Boy Scout counsellor, I've read a number of other child-centered novels about WWII to recommend to my 12 year-old son and his scout friends. In my experience, I have found that very little reading material is encouraged to our school boys these days on the history of WWII. Instead, by the time they are onto this subject, 8th grade, then again in 12th grade, they are sent to view films and movies to fill in any of the gaps missing from the school curriculum. And more notably, on the West Coast, where I live, there is more emphasis on the Pacific Theatre and much is lost regarding Europe, although both are so important.

I highly recommend this book for your middle grade and high school children. And I would encourage a discussion with them regarding the challenges that people face during political and war-time hardships weather they are adults or children of any nation.

I would also recommend this memoir to anyone interested in the more personal interactions of how the Nazi Occupation forces dealt with the local populations. There-in has some unique insight.
